Programme Management (as an area of professional practise)
Programme Management isn't just about running a very large project
or lots of very small ones at the same time. It's true purpose is
to deliver the benefits set out in the business strategy.
Programme Management is a professional discipline in itself. It
serves to define long-term objectives of the organisation and once
established, to identify key projects that will help to attain them.
The key point at this level is achieving the benefits that these
projects will ultimately bring to the business.
Due to the strategic nature of programme management, the types
of changes that it brings to the business are BIG and will affect
the business on a large-scale, in areas such as re-structuring,
relocation, rationalisation and even business-direction.
Managing a portfolio of unrelated projects, such as the way a Sales
Account Manager or general administrator might, is not the kind
of Programme Management we are talking about here. This definition
usually comes from project management software to allow for scheduling
and reporting purposes.
